Start at the mouth of the Kentucky River, close to Carlton Kentucky, Pat and I visited the fourteen locks on the Kentucky River. We started at lock 1 about a mile up the river from the Ohio and went to each of the 14 locks. Preserving a pictorial history of all the locks on the Kentucky River turned out to be a very exciting adventure. Finding the locks was very difficult. If I had the map on TopoZone web site it would have been much easier.  TopoZone - Lock Number 1

When I started collecting photos for this web site I was using a Canon A1. I used prints and slides during the first year of photographing. I went digital with a Canon 20D and this past year I got a 30D.There is a lot of difference in the photos hopefully they got better. I was distracted from this project many times. I don't remember what year I started and I don't know when I will stop; I took some more photos of lock 6 and the river yesterday.

When I started this adventure I thought it would be a great way to do photography, to get a theme and follow that idea through. It made it like reading or writing a story for me. I would like to be able to communicate what this adventure is to me but it is too great to express

This story has evolved into much more than a way for me to publish some photos. I intend to keep adding to this web site, the history of the river has become a real part of the story or is the story. Last week I was able to acquire the aerial photos of locks 1-14 from the U S Army Corps of Engineers and have included them I got some old photos that I will include later.

The Kentucky River history presented is taken from The Falls City Engineers, A History Of the Louisville District Corps of Engineers U S Army 1970-1983 printed 1984. The appendix covering the Kentucky River is contained on the link Lock History .

I have obtained more history to include in the web site. "Kentucky River Development: The Commonwealth's Waterway" is a book written by Leland R Johnson and Charles E. Parrish for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District. A schedule for the Locks and the name of the roads they are on this link . Schedule Info .
